What is Run to the Sun?
‘Run to the Sun’ is an annual 24hour relay event. The focus is on fun. Every year it aims to raise much needed funds for RTProjects, an independent, Durham based mental health charity. See ‘About RTP’ (link) for more info about us.
This event is also a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the achievements of all involved with RTProjects, including:
- Our service users, many of whom have overcome considerable personal challenges. Most would not have believed that they could take part in an event such as this but many will be there so come and say hello.
- Our wonderful, amazing volunteers who give up their time to help others, many of whom will be at ‘Run to the Sun’ They are indeed very special people.
- Many many people and organisations who have supported us over the last 10 years. That includes YOU! Over 100 people took part last year so come along and have fun and feel the feel goodness of this event.
Who can take part?
Absolutely everyone! Children... Runners…Chickens… Walkers… Families… Wheelchair users… Non-Runners… Batman…Students… Dog walkersand their Dogs…..You!
Your team could be your School… your local Pub pals… your work colleagues?
It’s a great opportunity to have fun, while also helping others by supporting a fantastic little local charity.
Everyone knows that physical activity good for you but did you know that there are also five ways to mental wellbieng and one of them id ‘Giving’ so taking part is good for you too!
When is it?
The fun starts at Saturday 16th June 2018. So many great activities are being organised for this year's event, and the Big Start will begin at 12-noon.
Where does it take place?
The event takes place at Maiden Castle Athletics track, behind the Graham Sports Centre at Durham University.
There is ample parking on site, but you must register your vehicle at reception.
Directions: Leave the A1 at the A177, Bowburn and Peterlee Junction. Take the exit signposted Bowburn from the roundabout. Continue on this road for approximately 3 miles. At this stage you will see the Rose Tree Pub on your left. Go over the bridge and on the right hand side you will see the Sports Centre playing Fields.
What Happens at Run to the Sun?
Based on the idea that ‘the baton must not stop’ for 24 hours, from Saturday at 12 noon until Sunday at 12 noon, including right through the night, the baton will be carried by people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds, all in a spirit of fun with fancy dress as a big theme.
Over the two days and all through the night there will be exciting activities and entertainment including: live music, mindfulness walks, face painting. Meet Jet & Ben the police dogs, make something at the craft stall, try some delicious home made information about other local services and more! You can even camp out. This year we are planning a midnight lantern parade so come along and make a lantern?

There will be prizes for:
- Best fancy dress,
- Slowest lap time.
- Wackiest way of getting around the track
- Longest time spent on the track
- Longest distance covered
- Most money raised by an individual fundraiser,
- Most money raised by a team or group.
There will also be a tombola with lots of interesting prizes to be won.
On the day
If you sign up online, you can tell us when you’re planning to come or you can just come anytime you like. Feel free to come back again at any point during the event, it’s actually a little bit more-ish…
There’ll be a sign in table where you should let one of our volunteers know you’ve arrived, and you can buy a t-shirt to remember the great time you had!
If you haven’t signed up online, you can still come and join in the fun; just see one of our volunteers on the sign-in desk and you can pay by cash or card.

How to Fundraise for RTP
Run to the Sun is a fundraiser, so please do try to raise as much as you can on top of your entry fee!
To fundraise Set up your own fundraising page on MyDonate, or download a sponsor form here and bring your sponsorship money with you on the day. Make sure you join our facebook event for up to date information regarding the event.
You have until 31st August for your fundraising efforts to be counted towards the competition for highest amount raised. However you can of course continue to give us any money you have raised at any time after the event.
Remember, there’s a great prize for the person or team who has raised the most funds. This year it could be you!! Last years prizes were tickets to Beamish Museum, and a meal for two at Tia’s in Durham.
